As a small business owner I often find myself in the vicious cycle of being worried either about not having enough work to do, or worried about having to do the work I have in my job queue.
There’s worry either side. And whatever happens I’m losing out to this level of fear.
Is there enough work coming in this month to pay my staff? Even though there always has been.
Will my business just suddenly tank? AI is a common fear for voice actors.
Will I make more than I made last month? The never ending aspiration for growth.
The nature of this business is to go from Feast to Famine and vice versa. It’s either busy or quiet.
These are the stresses which to be frank do not help anyone’s mindset.
And this is why as a small business owner it’s so important to establish reason and purpose.
Why are we doing what we’re doing?
The WHY is what will get you through the hard times and remind you what it’s all about when you have those angst moments.
My why for getting involved in voice over was to do something creative which I love and literally have some extra money pay for my take aways (no joke).
Also, narrating and being able to bring words to life is right up there in terms of what we humans love.
You see, any great leader has understood the power of words and delivering those words. To inspire, to entice, to paint and be able to put images in the minds of others.
And as one who has that ability I believe it’s my duty to share that with the world and help other brands/people do the same.
Of course it’ll get busy and quiet, that’s just the nature of this business. Any business.
And when it’s quiet, use that time to take my son to the driving range and enjoy the downtime.
And be aware that work will always be there. Long after we are gone.
So remember to not take things too seriously and look after oneself first.
And now over to you…
Think about WHY you are doing what you’re doing.
And if you feel brave enough to share it, please do.
